On October 12th at the 2011 World Food Prize, CropLife International and the U.S. State Department held a live webcast, "Technology on Trial: how resistance to innovation is threatening the global food supply," where CropLife launched the Declaration for Farmer Choice.

The Declaration for Farmer Choice is a document built on five simple principles that provide farmers the knowledge and freedom to choose what tools and practices are best for their unique plot of land.

Introducing the document was Gilbert Bor, a smallholder farmer from Kenya, who called on governments and NGOs to provide their support for the Delcaration.

“The declaration provides a foundation that all organizations should embrace – ensuring farmers have the ability to produce enough for our growing world while ensuring economic livelihoods.” stated Bor, “Farmers need technology to achieve sustainability, so they can survive as farmers and preserve our planet. I urge individuals, organizations and governments to sign on to the Declaration for Farmer Choice today.”

At launch, several organizations have already joined CropLife International in supporting the Declaration for Farmer Choice. The International Seed Federation, Truth about Trade and Technology, Pan African Agribusiness & Agroindustry Consortium, and the International Fertilizer Industry Association have pledged their support and will join CropLife in demonstrating to the public and private sector the importance of allowing farmers the freedom to choose the tools that are best for their lands and livelihoods.
